Summer has arrived up at Fern Ravine, which means… weeding! Those heavy late rains were good for many of the natives, certainly, but equally good for the thistles and introduced annual grasses that are endeavoring to smother them. So out came the gloves, and wheel barrows, and sunscreen, and folks set to work in the bright sunshine!
This view is looking roughly west from the Sequoia Arena entrance road, which loops around the wetland area here and off into the distance. The wetland itself is in the left of this photo, and much of today’s work is on that slope uphill and to the right of it.
A lot of natives have been both planted and liberated here over the past few seasons, many of them on the January work day featured in the following post (in fact, you may recognize some of the individual trees in these photos!): https://johnslaymaker.wordpress.com/2011/02/06/friends-of-sausal-creek-tree-planting-day-january-22-2011-fern-ravine/
Shall continue this story soon! For now, though, a slideshow that includes many more photos from today:
